Marketing your paintings:

  • Photography Studios
  • Open your own art shop
  • Inquire about local art shows
  • Print houses
  • Get involved with local artist groups societies
  • Ebay
  • Start your own art web site

Photography Studios

Photography studios are great places to market your work. When you get a few paintings under your belt, you should make a portfolio for yourself. You should also make up some business cards. Professional looking. DON'T SKIMP ON YOUR CARDS! Cheap cards give a cheap impression.

Print out some 4/6 inch prints of your best work to display to someone in the studio; preferably a manager. Show them your work and give them a business card. Tell them you will give them a percentage of the business that they send you. I would also advise that you print on canvas your best painting. Maybe an 18 by 24 inch example of your work. 4 by 6 inch prints are nice for your portfolio, but nothing speaks volumes like having a full size actual painting of your work.

ALWAYS be courtious, get a contact name and do a phone follow up.

Open your own art shop

Once you get a few paintings done and you start to amass some works, you may consider opening up an art shop. You can sell a lot more than just your own work. Or you can open up a gallery exclusive to local artists

Try to be creative when it comes to marketing your work!

Local Art Shows

Local art shows are great places to see and be seen in. Try and find any local art societies and centers and see if you can get a list of annual and upcoming art shows. Then once you have a list, do the research and try and make contact with the show organizers. That way you can find out about how to enter your work, entry fees and things like that.

Get involved with the local art community. When you network, you sell work.

Print Houses

Print houses are another place you may want to try and market your work. You can go around and tell them you are looking for a local print house to get your painting printed and you are just stopping by to find out about their company and to inquire about pricing. What's great is that you can bring in examples of your work and get them to look at it to make sure they can do the work and do it well. Then you can happen to mention the same deal as before, for every customer they send you, you give them a small percentage of the sale.
(And if you are smart, you will price accordingly to cover the extra percentage you have to give in return for the customer.

Get involved with local artist groups and art societies

If you are around art, you will do better at art. You will make friends and build connections that you otherwise wouldn't. You will also better yourself as well as start to build a reputation in the art community.

Ebay

I haven't tried this yet. I have been meaning to get something printed and test the waters on Ebay. I do know that if something is a one of a kind on Ebay they will sell for significantly higher dollar amounts than most other items.

If you decide to try this out, make sure you print your work professionally on canvas so you can get some great pictures of your painting. Plus people will take it much more seriously if you have more that just the digital images from Painter X. Have pictures of it ON CANVAS!

Start your own art web site

This is almost a given.

If you enjoy painting and are proud of your work, then you should share it with the world! There are many resources for getting a web site together for you in no time at all. You just have to research and be willing to learn a little bit about it. Most people make it out to be much harder than it actually is.

I will try and get some resources together to post here for people eager to get their work up on the web.
